Winter Driving in the Upper Midwest: Practical Tips for Professional Drivers
Carrier Express LLC 5 min read
Snow, ice and wind are part of the job across Minnesota and the northern states. Habits that help drivers and freight get through winter safely.
Anyone who drives a truck through Minnesota and the surrounding states knows winter is not a single storm — it is months of changing road conditions. Preparation and patience matter more than speed.
Before you leave
- Check weather and road conditions along the full route, not just at the origin
- Clear snow and ice from the windshield, mirrors, lights and the trailer roof where possible
- Confirm fuel, washer fluid and winter-rated supplies are topped off
- Pack extra warm clothing, gloves, food, water and a flashlight
On the road
- Slow down and increase following distance well beyond normal
- Watch for black ice on bridges, overpasses and shaded stretches
- Use gentle, smooth inputs — steering, braking and throttle
- Be cautious with an empty or lightly loaded trailer in high crosswinds
Know when to stop
No load is worth a crash. If visibility or traction drops to the point where you are not comfortable, find a safe place to park and communicate with dispatch. Professional carriers expect and support that decision.
